Introduction

Web based hospital management systems are designed for clinics, hospitals, diagnostics, medical institutes and research centres. These systems are usually e-governance initiatives whose sole purpose is to make hospital management paperless (Ball, Weaver, Kiel, 2004). They include back office clinical and generic management of all hospital related activities and are an integration of overall source of a hospital in a single software application. The following study therefore is the study of literature review of web based (online) hospital management systems and is majorly focused towards understanding their benefits, Web Based Hospital Management Systems their requirements, their significance in today’s life and usability of web interfaces (Chatfield, 1981).

Literature Review

Requirements of Hospital Management Systems

System configuration

Hardware requirements are Processor (Intel Pentium four or higher), RAM (512 MB or above), Hard Disk Drive (500 MB free space), Printer (ink jet), Pen Drive (512 MB).

Software requirements are Programming Language (visual programming), Backend (MS SQL server 2005), Front End (visual basic.net) and Operating System (Windows XP) (Hatcher, 1981).

Operation and function

This system is designed to keep tracks of aspects regarding housekeeping databases and can delete old and non-required data manually. Moreover, it only allows access to the authorized users who have specific responsibilities such as administrators and operators. Depending upon their designation, Web Based Hospital Management Systems the user will be able to get entrance to particular modules of the system (Littauer, 1967). Web Based Hospital Management Systems Major functions this software performs include a login service for enabling authorized entry into the system, on admittance of patient; his registration with the hospital can be checked and when patient checks out, his ID from hospital system can be deleted. Also, Web Based Hospital Management Systems this system is helpful in producing reports consisting of list of detailed data about the patient who was admitted into the hospital (Al-Hakim, 2007).

System feature requirements

System features require a login module which only records user and his passwords. Patient module is responsible of keeping records of all the details regarding outpatients and inpatients (Moustafa, 2013). Here the name of patient, his address, allocated room number and doctor’s name are stored for future references. Inpatient modules include requests for admission while outpatient modules include managing of activities which are linked to patients who visit the resident doctor, consultant doctor, hospital for continuous consultations, treatments and checkups. Pathology module generates reports to be used in path abs of hospital while billing modules prepare the treatments costs and bills for both inpatients and outpatients (Palley, 1991).

Logical database requirements

Logical database requirements of hospital management system include tables for patient details, doctor details, room details and billing details (Powell, 1982).  Software system attributes are a combination of its reliability, availability, security and maintenance. Reliability attributes of hospital management system is an application of its consistency that it produces fast and verified results upon use, availability measures the handiness of this system to carry out convenient operations, security is the measure of password protected safeguard of the system so the user can effectively access the information while maintainability and portability of hospital management system is the upkeep of its deigns so new requirements can be incorporated into it acceding to specific module requirements (Rocha, 2013).

Importance of Web Based Hospital Management Systems

There are many types of software available across the world for different industries and hospital management system is one of them. Its sole purpose is to provide a system based platform for nursing homes and hospitals so they can…
