Abstract

THE GIRLS/WOMEN AFFECTED BY FGM: The current report is related to the issue of girls/female genital mutilation in the UK and the different factors that are related to this issue in the UK. The several research questions have been highlighted in this IRP. FGM is basically (sometimes referred to as female circumcision) which means procedures that intentionally cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons It is also referred to as the female genital cutting. In the Past, it has been evaluated that Female Genital Mutilation is also related to the culture of a particular country as well. An important element that can be covered in the Individual research project is the impact of geographical location on the perception of the people about Female Genital Mutilation.

1. Introduction

THE GIRLS/WOMEN AFFECTED BY FGM: The current report is related to the issue of girls/female genital mutilation in the UK and the different factors that are related to this issue in the UK. The measures that have been adopted by the government of UK in this respect have also been measured. The main purpose of this report is to identify and figure out that how the government of United Kingdom is supporting the female population that is affected by “female genital mutilation”. The report also includes the detailed amount of discussion related to the issue of female genital mutilation in the UK. The discussion also includes the justification related to the discussion of the subject matter of the report. The concluding part of the report includes the major points that have been identified in the discussion.

The scope of the report covers the female genital mutilation cases in the UK. Therefore, the majority of the portion of the report is based on the discussion related to different aspects of female genital mutilation and how females who are facing this situation have to deal with this issue. Furthermore, the scope of the report also includes the different negative consequences that women have to face because of FGM and the critical analysis on this issue. Along with that the report also includes the actions that have been taken by the government along with the importance of the further actions that are needed to be taken by the government for effective management of this issue. The concluding part of the report covers the main aspects that have been highlighted in the report.

3. Detailed Account of the Issue of Female Genital Mutilation

Female genital mutilation is a term that was first initiated by World Health Organization (WHO) and most of the health professional around the globe are very much aware of this term. FGM is basically (sometimes referred to as female circumcision) which means procedures that intentionally cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons It is also referred to as the female genital cutting (WHO, 2015). It is further highlighted that there are no health benefits of FGM to the females; therefore, it has been recognized as the violation of the human rights (Shell‐Duncan, 2008). Although FGM is illegal in the UK still it is found abundantly in the UK also in other African countries. Therefore, the need for the identification of the factors related to this issue is of paramount importance. It has also been highlighted that around 60,000 girls in the UK are under the threat of FGM, 137,000 females are living under the consequences of FGM in the UK (Guardian, 2015). In February 2014, the UK government announced plans to a new study and steps were carried out to identify whether how many women and girls living in England and Wales are affected by Fertile Genital Mutilation (Gov.uk, 2015).

This was part of a commitment to preventing FGM during International day of tolerance for FGM. It is highlighted that the act of FGM is undertaken generally by the women who have lack of medical training. The feminist theory can be related to the issue of FGM which can also be used to further explain the issues that women face due to FGM. According to Tiefer (2008), the feminist theory deals with the rights of the females and highlights the fact that females have equal right to enjoy their life and lead a normal life according to their wishes.
