Human Resource Management
Importance of performance management systems
Performance appraisal methods are implemented worldwide so that both individuals and organizations can develop. Tapamoy (2008), states that performance appraisal helps an organization in finding the information about an employee’s skills, abilities and performance so that needs are met at both ends. This helps in not only enhancing the human resource base of the organization but also to achieve the goals of the organization.Human Resource Management
Results based appraisal method
Overview
Results method is a type of performance appraisal method that can be implemented in Akbar and Sons.
Components
With the results method of appraisal the employees are evaluated on the basis of their ability to meet certain targets or goals. Thus with Akbar and Sons, the employees can be evaluated on basis of sales, output and number of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) projects achieved, within a given timeframe. However, this also means that the organization has to give feedback to the employees to help their understand how they are doing. This means understanding that they accountable for achieving or not achieving their goals and how can improve. Further, outlining practices which would make target achievement more manageable would give the employees a chance to learn and improve thus adding a learning and development aspect into the results appraisal method. Additionally, the results method is also useful for the organization to re-evaluate certain strategies. Certain targets might be unrealistic and communication of those by the employees gives the organization, in this case BP, a chance to set revised, and achievable, goals.Human Resource Management
Critical Evaluation
Results method is purely based on the employee’s work performance and his/her ability to meet the organization goals. This is a means by which the employees are motivated, their true potential is assessed, it helps in making decisions regarding the employees’ transfers, promotions, terminations and layoffs, administration of merit pay, etc. It helps motivate employees to do better and work efficiently, and also help in finding their development and training needs and also identify poor performers. In the context of Akbar and Sons which has been recently acquired, evaluation in terms of certain set parameters such as output, sales, business brought in, etc. would allow the employees to be fairly judged in terms of their performance rather than their individual traits and behaviors
Employees of Akbar and Sons would be empowered to work towards the achievement of their goals as failure to do so would result in them being held accountable for not being effective and an explanation would be required when they do not hit their targets. In results appraisals, the employees are entirely held responsible for their outcomes and are given full discretion, within certain applicable limits, over the methods they use to accomplish them which gives them a sense of autonomy and empowerment.
