From the activity of managerial gap analysis, I learned the gaps that I have in my performance and capabilities as a leader and the things I need to do to counter those issues. Administrative Coursework Moreover, by conducting the managerial gap analysis, I also learned the actions that will be required to undertake the deficiencies that I have as a leader and the manager. Moreover, reflecting upon this unit activity, the meaning of Leadership, has become necessary as
this will enhance my journey and experience as a professional; just like Boud, Keogh and Walker (1985) rightly puts it that reflections are those intellectual and affective activities in which individuals engage to explore their experiences in order to lead to new understanding and appreciations – with this tool, I am going to reach some desired destination in my professional and personal life.
Therefore, it can be concluded that by undertaking these activities, I will be able in a position to effectively undertake steps that would be necessary for me in covering my shortcomings as a leader and a manager in the future. Furthermore, I would also be in a position to guide and motivate my sub-ordinates towards increase in their overall productivity.
Mintzberg’s Managerial role
Mintzberg has identified 3 managerial roles as follows:
1. Informational Roles
2. Interpersonal Roles
3. Decisional Roles
These roles are all crucial to the continuous existence of an organization but decisional roles are most important for managing in complex, changing work place environments.
Reason
Decision is the driver that determines the direction of all the resources, talents and potentials of an organization take. According to Denis, J-L., A. Langley and L. Rouleau, (2010) no matter the tools and opportunities available to an organization, leaders will have to carefully comb and weigh the advantage and disadvantage effects of such opportunities in decision making. Informational roles are responsible for information management ranging from monitor to disseminator and spokesperson (company representative).
Though this role contributes hugely to organizational development yet still acts on instructions and policies governing the organization’s operations; this policy is sponsored by decision taking.
Managerial Role I need to improve on
I have identified my weakness with Informational Roles. Monitoring is a very important role to my job but I am passive with reading memos and attending meetings. My competency here is weak and there is need for improvement especially in attending meetings.
Disseminator – I am not always keen on memo writing though it is somewhat important to my job.
Spokesperson – this is a very important role to my job as I have always attended defense meetings for additional tax liabilities with Federal regulatory bodies, such meetings are preceded with issuance of reports.
Having said this, it is imperative for managers to recognize their unique role as required or necessitated of a specific type of managerial role position in a particular sector or type of organization – flexibility is the watch word here….
