Introduction:
Case-study in which you apply the core principles : Mental problems are the part of life and every person has to face it at a stage of life, for a solution to these mental problems many therapies are introduced which are having positive results. The therapy or approach which we are focusing in this research paper is Solution-Focused Brief Therapy or commonly known as SFBT as the name indicates this is a goal-oriented approach in which patients present and future is focused about which we will learn in this research. Other than that, we will focus on a case which is about a young girl facing lots of mental issues;
we will focus in which the approach can cater this issue. We will more likely focus on what are the steps of treatment which can be done through this therapy (O’Connell, 2012). This research will discuss the focuses of this approach, objectives which this research is covering and how this research can cover these objectives. This whole research will be presented in the form of summative case study. The author will mention all the possible information which is needed and respects the privacy of the client and respects her confidentiality rights and therefore would not disclose the client’s name and address her with “X”.
Background:
X is a 19-year-old which has currently failed in her SSLC exams and because of which she has a bad mood and has less interest towards studies. In addition, there are many other symptoms which can be seen in her like concerned about petty issues, bad academic performance, higher aggression, feeling less important about herself, guilt feelings, sleeping issues, reduced appetite, crying issues, difficulty in attention and concentration.
In the year 2010, she told that she is unable to memorize and understand what she was taught and reading in the classroom. Her academic performance was having a negative effect and it started to decrease in next year. From that year, her mother reported about her aggression, being irritated and she beats her sister.
As her mother stated she was slow, weak, dull and inactive. She was being pushed every time by her mother for academics still she was not getting good grades. She started thinking of herself as a disappointment. She was also having some negative vibes like she doesn’t want to live anymore. However, she never attempted to suicide. She also felt guilty of letting her parents down and couldn’t perform well in academics.
She left her Dance and Meditation classes which she was interested in before and was less interested in other extra-curricular activities this was all because of her previous symptoms. As she was having less sleep and food she was taken to a psychiatrist which has prescribed some medication which was anti-depressants but it was having no change other than her sleep was neutralized. Because of her lack of interest in studies, she suffers from depression.
Her parents cannot understand her situation as she is shy and she doesn’t talk much. Her feelings are to herself.
Treatment Formulation:
Causes of this Problem: Client was having the good academic background before but due to some reasons, she was not performing well. After the bad performance, the stress which she took to perform well is the vital reason of her facing all the mental illness. The pressure of studies as well as the pressure which she was getting from her parents was the main issues.
Risk Factors: Client has stated that she feels like she does not want to live anymore this is really a serious life threating statement. This statement couldn’t be taken lightly as these are the constant reminders of suicidal attempts, maybe she can harm herself so this can be a clear risk factor while addressing this issue.
Protective Factors: There are lots of people that are concerned about her mental illness, her mother is the first support person for her and she is the true helper to her. Her mother doesn’t want her daughter to harm herself.
Coping Mechanism: She is not careless and has the willpower to change her and become normal like she used to be. This motivation of her can be the coping mechanism for her to overcome this serious mental illness (De Shazer, 2012).
Social Circumstances: X was having a great interest in dancing, going to meditation classes and hanging out with friends but because of her studies failure she ended all of these activities, the stoppage made the situation worse and she was in depression. She is a 19-year-old and had lots of societal pressures on her. Her low self-esteem and less open feelings triggered her interpersonal issues.
Summary: X has gone through lots of trouble because of her failure on the academic side because of which she has faced lots of mental illness issues these are some chronic and emotional issues. Case-study in which you apply the core principles Because of these she is physically and psychologically disturbed. She is feeling guilty for herself and feeling sad for not full filling her parents’ dreams. This pressure is constantly revolving around her because of which she shows lots of anger in her and sometimes beats her sister which can be said as she is releasing her stress of her sister (Gingerich, 2013).
Hypothesis: X is having emotional issues can attempt suicide as she has stated she “doesn’t want to live anymore” the pressure which she is taking can also result to some physical issues as well like fatigue in the body. Case-study in which you apply the core principles She has not shown symptoms of depression but continuing this can cause her depression. Solution-Focused Brief can be an attempt to work on her mental issues and can make the things right (Franklin, 2011).
Objectives of the Therapy:
This therapy aims not only to serves an individual but it also has a core focus on families and couples. The objective on which this therapy was developed was with a key purpose which was to help others find solutions to challenges, this approach is not limited to only domestic issues but is also eyes on other life places such as workplace, schools or even societal issues are also catered in here. an individual from different backgrounds, gender, socioeconomic class, cultures all is benefited by this type of therapy (Gingerich, 2013).
Solution-focused therapy is used to treat many of issues. As mentioned above in this therapy client can also suggest some solutions, the person facing the problem is generally considered as the “Expert” in this situation. The therapist motivates them to find the solution by own which gives a confidence to the client that they, Case-study in which you apply the core principles themselves can solve their problem it is accepted as the most effective solution. It is to be noted that this therapy shouldn’t be applied on those which are with severe mental health concerns (D’Zurilla, 2010).
In the case of X, the objective was to make her work like she was before and for that, her results must be improved which will give her motivation to some extent where she can resume her daily life routine.
