Executive summary

The main purpose of the assignment is to explore the current health issue of male mental health in Newham in the United Kingdom (UK) concerning inequalities and causes. The inequality model chosen is by Göran Dahlgren and Margaret Whitehead (1991). This model helped in building the relationship between determinants of health for contemporary healthcare management. The UK health and social care system has immense pressure to refocus public health and related inequalities. The prevalence of common mental illness (CMI) and severe mental illness (SMI) has increased in the last decade. Hence, it is a prominent public health issue. A total of 10,000 adult men living in Newham experienced at least one of the common mental health illnesses. It accounts for 18% population between 16 to 64 years. CMI includes depression, anxiety, and stress. While, SMI includes schizophrenia, eating disorders, and other addictive behaviors. It accounts for 14% of men who have mental health issues due to eating disorders. In Newham, most of the males experience common mental illness or severe mental illness before the age of sixteen. Additionally, adult males who got schizophrenia only lived for the next 20 years of their life on average. There were several reasons for mental health issues such as unemployment, low income, proper housing inaccessibility, and low education. All these factors are included in inequalities. Further, in Newham, less than 12% of the people are employed who also receive mental health services. Determining that a higher percentage of people attending mental health services are unemployed.
