Introduction and Definitions
Critical Evaluation of Terrorism:The selected violence for the essay is “Sexual Violence”. Sexual violence is a part of terrorism. In the view of Scheffield (1995), sexual terrorism is a system in which males frighten females as well as a system of dominating the females. Another definition of sexual violence explains that sexual violence is something any sexual act, it has been attempt by the sexual terrorist in order to create fear as well as attempt by an intimate partner. It also includes sexual comments that are usually redundant. It is a course of coercion where accused assaults the victim forcibly regardless of any relation to the victim.The word terror comes from the Latin word terrere, which means frighten. Thus, the word terror lies within terrorism. This word came into existence around 2,100 years ago. The methodical use of terror is “terrorism” which means oppression, cruelty and coercion (Terrorism, 1975). There are number of definitions of terrorism that defines violent acts of people which are intentionally performed in order to create terror which means fear. Terrorism also defines such violent acts that are religiously, intentionally or politically carried out in order to disregard or disrespect the civilians. Non government agencies intentionally commit such type of violence in order to create fear among civilians. Diaz- Paniagua (2008) states that terrorism has also been practiced by political organizations in order to furthering their objectives and has been experienced by conventional and unconventional political parties, patriotic groups, religious groups as well as governments that are ruling.
There are numbers of definitions that explains terrorism. Study shows that nowadays terrorism has become a part of daily lives because of which the rate of fear is increasing day by day among the society. In the view of Walter Laqueur (1999), terrorism is a term which includes any kind of violence as well as terrorism is one of a strategy adopted by a certain groups in order to achieve the selected target. The aim of the people who create violence is to induce fear and tremble in the victims. Terrorism can also be defined as method of anxiety inspiring. Anxiety inspiring method is that in which an individual repeats violent actions. This is a way in which terrorism randomly applies to the targeted civilians but not to the accidental incidents (Schmid and Jongman, 1988). It has been stated that terrorism includes all the acts performed by a criminal in order to frighten or to create a state of terror in the minds of the general public or any specified group of people (League of Nations Convention Definition of Terrorism, 1937).
It has been estimated that more than 200 million women and children suffer from sexual violence per year. However, it does not show the exact scale because of the victims not prefer to report about the violence being committed against them. During conflicts, sexual violence has become a silent issue which assault victims for the long time (UNSGS, 2006).
Prevalence of Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict

Usually sexual violence that is related to conflict takes place in homes, military sites, imprisonment places as well as in camps that are built for refugees or for displaced persons. Displaced persons are those who are forced to leave their homes or place of residence in order to keep them save from armed conflicts or to avoid general violence. Displaced women and children used to live in a place of refuge which is unsafe and displaced persons are the victims that are sexually violent at the place of refuge. It has been researched that the actual victims of sexual violence are women and girls. Sexual violence acts are committed by the pro-government militia, rebel groups as well as by state forces during war and sexual violence may also commit during looting raid. Armed groups commit sexual violence by abducting a number of women, men and children as well as forced them to stay in sexual slavery or into combat roles and have been raped, humiliate and afflict by armed groups within detention. Sexual slavery is a crime to limit one’s self-sufficiency and freedom. This crime includes where women are being forced to perform temporary marriages with soldiers as well as other practices where women are treated as property. However, the difference between rape and sexual slavery is that rape is a complete offence whereas sexual slavery is an incessant offence. However in the course of displacement, family violence is also prevalent because of loss of income, stress aggravates by distress. In order to maintain international empathetic, workers or an individual turn to prostitutes in order to meet their sexual requirements, which sequentially may lead to women and children being smuggled and use for sexual purposes……………………….
