DIGITAL COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY: A CONTEMPORARY MODULATION OF PSYCHOLOGICAL TREATMENT

Introduction:

The context and approach of the mental health of the community are under an evolution with regard to the economic variations and advancements in technology. As per the changes in the attitude and lifestyle of the local population, the health service in England has also been under modification in order to match the current status of human wellbeing. The major changes have been seen to occur in the year 2007 when development in media and technology took over the entire population regardless of age, gender, and financial status. The industrial and social revolution has been instantly followed by the decline in the mental health of the people. The survey conducted in the year 2014 under the National Health Service Digital has indicated that out of 6 adults, in England, at least one presents a common mental health condition (McManus et al., 2016). Similarly, out of 5 women and 8 men, at least one is affected by a mental health condition in each case (McManus et al., 2016). In order to deal with the presenting scenario, National Health Service (NHS) has been upgrading the delivery models and treatment means of mental health. Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) is one such program that has been introduced as a treatment modulation of the mental health wellbeing of the local community in the United Kingdom.
Amongst many deviations in the therapeutic approach, the main focus of development has largely included the notion of technology in dealing with the affected group of individuals. There have been many studies that expressed the existence of a relationship between excessive use of social media and risk of mental health deterioration (McLean, Christie, and Gray, 2017; Lessof et al, 2016; Thomée, Härenstam, and Hagberg, 2012, p.176; Primack et al, 2009, pp. 181-188). In light of the popular approach towards the usage of media, the psychological interventions have also advanced towards the adoption of technology into therapies.

The Intermix of Technology and Therapy

The annual report of NHS Digital for the year 2018 has indicated the cognitive behavioral therapy and counseling for depression to be the most common practices adopted for mental health treatment (Moller et al., 2019, p.252). Whereas, the most presenting mental health issues have included depression, anxiety, and other stress-related conditions. The report has exhibited the rising number of people in need of psychological treatment and also, expressed increasing interest in the community to seek mental help with a strong will to complete the assigned treatment (Moller et al., 2019, p.252). Although the governing bodies of the United Kingdom have invested largely in improving the mental health of the community, the research has still indicated restrictions in attaining the desired results (Bastiampillai et al., 2019, pp.e8-e9; Thornicroft, 2018, pp.636-637).

The indulgence of the local community in mental wellbeing has evidently increased with the introduction of mental health programs around the region. However, the use of antidepressants has also inclined sharply with the treatment opportunities that implies short – term impact rather than long – term therapeutic results (Cipriani et al., 2018, pp.420-429)
