A Critical Evaluation of Domestic Violence
The publication of World Health Organization (2013) described that domestic violence against women is an important well-being problem and a huge cultural issue. It’s a major violation of women’s human rights in the society. The 8th and current Secretary General of United Nations’ Ban Ki-Moon described domestic violence as the kind of violence against women is highly unacceptable, inexcusable and unbearable, and therefore, it is the universal truth that it is not pertinent in any country, culture and community in the world. Certainly, the survivor who has suffered from domestic violence is not just damaged physically, but also mentally, emotionally, psychologically and socially.
The scientific data of World Health Organization proves from the identified prevalence of violence against women, that it is of two forms. Intimate partner violence and domestic violence caused by someone other than a partner. Inopportunely, there are highly few communities that accept violence caused by an intimate partner or marital rape as a serious issue as relative to non-partner domestic violence. Both the forms of domestic violence have almost similar kind of effects on physical health of women, their reproductive system, and mental condition.
By definition, Randall and Venkatesh (2016) stated, domestic violence is a sexual act committed against an individual without their freely agreed consent. According to the recent statistics provided by Rape Crisis Center, only in England and Wales around 85,000 females and 12,000 males are sexually assaulted each year which roughly suggests that only 11 adults are raped each hour. Approximately less than a million of adults experience domestic violence in only England and Wales each year. However, only 15% rapes are reported to the forces while nearly 80-90% of those who are sexually assaulted know their offender prior to the evil doing. After looking at all the statistics, why domestic violence is one of the most neglected social issues? Why most funds are received by the education and health sector, however, domestic violence is not even counted among important social issues? The major reason is emotional detachment. As, here comes the difference between “my world” and “their world,” it’s obvious that until it doesn’t becomes a part of my world, we really don’t care about funding over this issue. To precise, we are not able to feel empathetic for the rape survivor.
As mentioned by Allroggen, Rassenhofer, Witt, Plener, Brähler and Fegert (2016), according to the recent studies the prevalence of domestic violence have mainly focused on child abuse, with less attention given to domestic violence in adults or in adolescences, which is domestic violence committed by adolescents against adolescents, although, domestic violence in adults or adolescents origin severe mental and physical harm. Healey, Beauregard, Beech and Vettor (2014) stated that according to the perspective of sex offenders, raping or domestically abusing other person is the cause of their thinking to empower that person. Basically, these sex offenders think that by domestically abusing the women or a child they can empower them. As stated by different researches, feeling higher to women, the countenance of power, recompense and retaining control are the major reasons what makes these men turn their rationality into psychopathy and commit such crime. To brief, rape helps the offender or perpetrator to fulfil their basic psychological needs…………………………….
