What is Adrenarche and does it have a function?
During puberty there are large amounts of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) that are secreted via the adrenal glands, for both males and females. DHEA is known as a ‘weak androgen’, the secretion of this and other weak androgens is the first endocrine change during puberty and is known as adrenarche (Jones and Lopez, 2014). What is Adrenarche and does it have a function There is no solid evidence for the actual cause and function of adrenarche, but it still seems to be a significant event. The term adrenarche is clearly defined and understood, as stated, however, what is not understood is the cause or function of adrenarche.
The onset of adrenarche is recorded to happen in both genders around the ages of 6 to 8 years. It is not a necessary requirement for the start of puberty in human males or females, What is Adrenarche and does it have a function but the two processes are also not independent of one another. Adrenarche is also not necessary for reproduction, however, it is related to secondary sex characteristics like pubic hair, odour, acne and primary sex organs. Some research claims that adrenarche could possibly be connected to brain development, for example, for rats,
the mitochondrial energy production is stimulated by DHEA, and the counterpart of this in humans is the development of a synchronous cortex that begins when a person reaches age 6 and continues till they have crossed their twenties (Campbell, 2010). However, the notion of a connection between adrenarche and brain development is still only a mere deduction from the copious amounts of research undertaken, as uptil now, What is Adrenarche and does it have a function there is no evolutionary evidence for the need of adrenarche in humans, even though it had been documented to be a part of hominoid history and is also a shared occurrence between…
