INTRODUCTION
Gerard Egan’s Skilled Helper Model is a 3-stage model utilized by psychotherapists, psychologists and counsellors in guiding, advising and helping people to overcome their problems. It enables people to solve their daily life issues (Egan, 2013).
Current scenario, elaborating the required changes and implementing them positively. The helper needs to excel in the skills required to implement this process thus helping the client in a more consistent and efficient manner. In this assignment, I’ll elaborate on the key stages, discuss the skills required and the role of the helper in developing a helping relationship between counsellor and the client and evaluate it with simulated role play.
TASK 1
KEY STAGES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A HELPING RELATIONSHIP
As stated in Egan (2013), the Egan model focuses on helping the client by evaluating 3 questions
- What’s the client is facing or going through presently?
- What changes does the client want?
- How can the client achieve his goals?
Thus keeping these questions in view it can be stated that Egan presents an orderly approach for helping based on three key stages which could be further sub-divided. Problem-solving perspective to clients’ issues has led to the development of these stages which focuses mainly on counsellor skills to assist clients in solving their problems. (Nelson, 2007).
In the view of Egan (2010), the key stages in building a helping relationship can be summarized as:
- Examining the client’s present scenario.
- Assisting the client in establishing goals.
- Helping the client in implementing the problem-solving approach.
Stage 1:
This stage focuses on the client’s current situation and helps in building a pleasant helping relationship between the counsellor and the client thus enabling the client to identify and understand the problems and concentrate on the positive aspects of the situation. At this initial stage client have a confused approach, therefore, the helper utilizes his skills in enlightening new and positive angles of the situation suppressing the negative and distorted thinking of the client and supports the client in developing productive methodologies to handle the situation and overcome problems (Egan, 2010).
Stage 2:
Intermediate Counselling: This stage enables the client to achieve a clear and detail understanding of their scenario. In this stage, the skilled counsellor helps the client in evaluating possible options keeping in view what the client actually wants. The counsellor points out the realistic and practical possibilities considering the clients need and encourages the client to develop decision-making capabilities by doing self-analysis, brainstorming and keeping in view the possible steps which can be taken in the particular situation. These techniques assist the client in evaluating different approaches accepting the positive ones and rejecting the negative ones considering the goals to be achieved (Egan, 2010).
Stage 3:
Intermediate Counselling: This stage includes skills which help clients to practically achieve their goals and develop strategies to resolve problems providing them continuous support. At this stage the counsellor utilizes his skills in helping the client to solve problems and develop skills, enabling the client to improve their future life. At this stage, the helper assists the client in adopting the best suitable strategy for their current situation and help in exploring and implementing the ways to achieve it which is only possible if stage 1 and 2 skills are properly utilized (Egan, 2010).
This 3 stage process helps the client to make a transition from the current scenario to the preferred or desired scenario with the proper assistance and utilization of skills of the helper Intermediate Counselling.
