5.1 Current Landscape and Justification of the Study
In the view of Gil (2009), China is currently involved in the promotion of Chinese language and its learning throughout different parts of the world to achieve its goals of foreign policy by using soft power. Apart from the local system, other foreign countries of the world such as the UK and the USA are also encouraging and facilitating their students to visit Chinese educational institutions to pursue their higher studies (British Council, 2016). It has been analyzed that there has been an increasing trend among the students around the globe to adopt Chinese as their second language which further highlights the growth in the popularity of the language across different countries and different cultures.
Countries have also offering easy travelling and visa services to the individuals who wish to learn Chinese in the Chinese universities (Denver Post 2012). However, it has been argued that although China’s efforts have proved to be quite successful in the creation of the positive image of the Chinese language and in attracting learners, there are still some major hurdles in the promotion of this language. One of the significant difficulties, in this case, is related to the difficulties of learning this language (Gill, 2009)
In the view of Yu (2010), the Chinese language is considered to be one of the most complicated languages to learn especially for the foreign students. It is further stated that out of the many difficulties that students face while learning the Chinese language, the least of those difficulties are related to understanding and writing of the characters or the alphabets in the Chinese language. The difficulties related to the learning of the Chinese language are not just limited to its learning.
As stated by Zhang and Mi (2010) the Chinese language is considered to be one of the hardest subject or languages to teach. It is further highlighted that specializing in the art of teaching the Chinese language to the students is very difficult. The teachers for this purpose have to put their extreme focus towards the sound and meaning of each character to develop the thorough understanding of the language. The instructors are restricted to make the students learn the strokes of each character once or maximum twice times.
The reason for that being is the fact that the Chinese language contains thousands of individual characters each with different sounds and meanings. The difficulty level of the Chinese language can be evaluated further when the Chinese language is compared with the other languages that are spoken in other major developing countries of the world such as English, Spanish, etc. (Lingua Franca, 2007)…
