Introduction

This assessment discusses the ethical dilemma in which a single mother gets frequently late to pick up her son who is physically unwell from his as she is working really hard to fulfill his wish of going to Disney land Paris and making ends meet.

This assessment discusses this moral dilemma, whether the mother is wrong or right to pick up her son late from school, while she is working hard to fulfill what her son wants, from two perspectives, one from the Kantian’s and the other from virtue ethic’s perspective.

This assessment further highlights the major difference which exists between Kantian’s and virtual ethics way of dealing with ethical or moral dilemmas.Philosophy and Ethics

Keeping in mind the ethical dilemma this assessment talks about how it helps us to understand about social work practice and how one should be dealing with such dilemmas keeping in mind the role that we play in a dilemma and our duties which are associated with the roles we play and also the importance of our own character as the essential factor which helps an individual to act ethically.

Examination of Dilemma from Kantian’s perspective

Kantians perspective is one of the best illustrations of a deontological moral theory. This perspective is based on the appropriateness or unfairness of an individual’s action is not at all based on their outcome but on expressing a doubt or choice between fulfilling our duty or not. (Rachels, Random House, Inc)

Deontologists have a firm belief that profound excellence includes commitment. It is our moral             responsibility to align our-self and our actions as per the norms of the society and on the contrary it is also our moral responsibility to restrain our- self from performing actions which are not correct as per the society.

On account of something is right or wrong does not really depend upon its outcome. To a certain extent the appropriateness or the inappropriateness of an action is present within the action itself. (Sullivan, 1994)

Majority of these theories identifies two major classes of obligations. The first one is nonspecific general obligations that we have towards any individual, these obligations are most of the time the action of forbidding something by law for instance, for instance, an individual should not lie or murder or steal etc.

On the other hand, some of these duties may be constructive such as supporting the ones who require help. Secondly, there are some responsibilities which we have due to our private or communal connections.

Philosophy and Ethics. If a promise is made to someone then it becomes your duty to fulfill your promise, if you are a father or a mother or the head of your family then it is your duty or obligation to provide the basic necessities of life to the people who are dependent on you. (O’NeillL, 1989)

Analyzing the second case’s moral/ethical dilemma from Kantian’s perspective the first thing that some individual needs to take into consideration the role of his or her job. But in this case the role that is defined is that of a mother and not an employee.

Hence it said from Kantian’s perspective that in this case the mother is right, and the school needs to cooperate with her. The reason of her being right is because she is playing the role of a mother and not just a normal mother but a single mother which puts upon her the responsibility of a father too.

It is mentioned that the thing Paul wants to do more than anything else is to go to Disneyland Paris, for which she is working really hard to get the money for the trip. As mentioned in the above paragraph that if you are a father or a mother or the head of your family then it is your duty or obligation to provide the basic necessities of life to the people who are dependent on you.

In this case Jane is fulfilling the basic necessities of her son and not just the necessities but she is also working really hard to play for her son’s wishes. Therefore, it can be stated that she is in the right place from Kantian’s perspective.

Virtue Ethics Standards

Virtue ethics is another perspective of ethics that focuses on human being’s character as the essential factor which helps an individual to act ethically, then as compared to the regulation about the action itself (deontology) or their outcomes (Consequentialism). (McDowell, 1997)

There are three main standards of virtue ethics……
