Introduction

In the view of Sellers and Shelton(2013), the processes of securing the paid employment, work status and the nature of relationships at work are highly dependent on various social factors including the gender, race and social classes. These processes are affected by the social factors regardless of the geography and development status of the country. This essay discusses the issue highlighted with specific focus on two social factors namely the race and the gender. The impact of both the factors on processes of recruitment for paid employed and relationships at work is said to be significant as an in-depth analysis carried in this essay. The body of essay is broken down into two separate parts based on race and gender and at the end of essay, a short and crisp conclusion is provided to conclude it.

The Effects of Race

As defined byUtsey, Ponterotto, Reynolds and Cancelli (2000), the race is one of the main social factors affecting the daily life of individuals. The racial discrimination is experienced in almost every nation around the globe; the discrimination is observed between the whites and blacks even in the most developed countries around the globe. This type of social discrimination has caused many biases among the population leading to severe social problems throughout the world. In the view of a report published byNational Research Council(2004), the study of biases induced due to racial differences is known as racism and the biases can pertain to any category such as personal, academic or career related. It is further stated that there are many cases when an individual is treated less favourably as compared to another in the same situation and it forms the basis of racism. It is further explained that the racial hatred has found to be common around the globe as it refers to doing something in public on the basis of race, nation, colour or ethnic origin of the individual and the act insults or humiliates the individual being targeted. The racial hatred can also lead to biases against that particular group of individuals based on any of the factors highlighted (race, nation, colour or ethnic origin). One of the biases is considered for this essay in specific which relates to the processes of securing employment, the status and expectations of the work and workplace interactions and relationships as discussed in the following paragraphs (Pager and Shepherd, 2008).Gender Essay.

In the view of Wood et al. (2009), the racial discrimination is observed in every field of life including the provision of employment and employment terms based on individual’s race. The research primary focused on testing the racial discrimination in recruitment processes in the UK and it was found that the white candidates have been able to get 68% response from the employers and the black candidates have got 39% response only when they have similar profileshighlighting a 29% difference in response based on racial discrimination. The overall results of the research indicate that the racial discrimination exists in the UK and it is also under focus by the government and regulatory authorities. Several steps have been taken to ensure fair recruitment practices in the country but the complete success has not been possible yet. An earlier research by Altonji and Blank (1999) also supports the findings of research discussed above as he found that racism affects not only the recruitment of labour and officials in the Great Britain but the overall practices at work are affected as a result of racism in the country. This study came up with generalised findings in terms of geography and concluded that the racism has affected the selection for different positions even in the well-structured companies. The recruiters tend to be biased towards providing the opportunity to the people belonging to the same race as theirs.

According to Deitch et al. (2003), the biasness by employers on the basis of race is not limited to the recruitment process only. Rather, it also affects the status of employees after recruitment and the work role assigned to them.Green(2003) conducted a research in the developing countries and it is found that the status of employees and work role assigned to them varied greatly based on the ethnic group and national origin of the employee. The individuals from same ethnic or national origin are given the desired status and work role; whereas, the individuals from other ethnic or national origin are handed the work role which is undesired by them. This highlights the existence of racial hatred in the work life in developing countries as analysed. Furthermore, the organisational culture in the developed countries is also not free of racial hatred and the differences in performance appraisal and promotions exist on the basis of racial differences of the individuals. For example: American Whites have a tendency to provide better performance rating to the White individuals against the Black ones; due to the colour based racial differences in America, it is rated high in terms of racial discrimination (Puhl, Andreyeva and Brownell, 2008).

It is evident from the discussion above that the behaviour of recruiters and seniors varies on the basis of racial differences. However, it is found that the behaviour of anyone at the work place can be affected on the basis of racial difference or hatred. Whenever, the racial hatred is induced between the colleagues, it has a direct impact on interaction between the individuals. As observed by a research study in India, the racism in India is high which is mainly based on the ethnic factors. Individuals from one ethnicity hinder interacting with individuals from other ethnicities even if they are working in the same company (Thorat and Attewell, 2007). Furthermore, it is found in the race has a significant impact on the interactions between the individuals at workplace. This differing level of interaction has also caused the change in relationships between the individuals pertaining to different races. The relationship between the individuals pertaining to same race is deeper and closer as compared to the individuals from different races in both developing and developed world. The racial discrimination or hatred has caused hindrance in forming the relationship with people from other colour, ethnicity or the nationality (Reskin, 2000).

It is further highlighted by Williams(2006) that the racial hatred exists at the organisations at each level and it has caused significant impacts on the human resources and overall productivity of the human resources. It is also evident that the colour has caused more racial discrimination in developed countries like USA and the Great Britain; whereas, the ethnic factors are responsible for most of the racial discrimination in developing countries like India. It needs to be noted that racial hatred has played a negative role in productivity of employees as they are less motivated when they are affected by the racial discrimination at workplace………..continued
