Leadership plays a pivotal role in the managing, reorienting and channelizing the efforts of the entire workforce to achieve the corporate goals (Gilley, McMillan and Gilley, 2009).

However, the organizational change is more natural said than done and requires effective management and leadership skills that can deal with different leadership mindsets within an organization (Alavi and Gill, 2016).

In the direction of developing a practical understanding of different leadership styles and mindsets, it is critical to study human behavior and thought the process and reveal the psychological dimension that triggers various actions and attitudes of people working in an organization.

Spiral Dynamics (SD) – Background & Theory

Spiral Dynamics is a valid theory and assessment tool that helps in developing an insight into different leadership mindsets (Pesut, 2001).  The approach focuses on differentiating individuals by their thinking mechanism which is shaped up through the evolution of values, experiences and the course of action adopted when exposed to different situations rather than categorizing them into various groups.

It is based on the development of human consciousness as they proceed in life or go through the spiraling levels of memes. All humans are capable of promoting to a superior level of meme based on what we learn and experience in the previous phase.

Each meme (also known a value system) or level is denoted by a color assigned to it: Beige, Purple, Red, Blue, Orange, Green, Yellow, and Turquoise. However, these memes of spiral levels do not represent the status of hierarchy and have equal significance.

The meme attributes can be perceived negatively or positively depending on the circumstances or experiences during multiple life situations (Beck and Cowan, 2014).
