Skill Portfolio (Ref No: 1404)

  1. What transferrable skills have you acquired whilst undertaking your course and the Professional Development Programme, and how have you applied them through the duration of your studies? Please refer to the list of skills on the previous page as a guide, but not a definitive list, of the types of transferable skills that you should incorporate in your answer.

Firstly, Skill Portfolio the often daunting and demanding modules in the coursework inculcated in me the analytical skills to solve any problem. In this regards, I learnt that once each problem is broken down into smaller parts, it becomes much easier to understand and solve that problem, which seemed very complicated initially. Also, regarding problem-solving, I learnt that it should be taken as a challenge instead of being intimidated of it as this way you can handle the problem confidently and once one has confidence, analysing it and solving it in a piecemeal basis becomes much easier.

Secondly, the group coursework effectively taught me the art of team working and how this can be extremely beneficial. Each team member worked within their own diverse capacities to contribute to the team, which made me realise how team working is both an individual effort and a combined one.  As for the combined effort, I realised how team working is about exchanging weaknesses with strengths so that where one group member falters, Skill Portfolio the other is there to support.

Also, I learnt that there has to be a perfect balance between individual identity and team recognition so that each person owns the team and does not try to dominate it.  Consequently, I learnt to be tolerant of other member’s opinions that were different from my own and this way realised how I left with more understanding and ideas that I came with.  Finally, Skill Portfolio I realized how trust was critical for team working where this worked both ways so that where I was being trusted for contributing to the best of my abilities, it took out the best in me and where I trusted others, it helped maintain harmony in the group.

In Addition, the modules made me realise how important it was to be adaptable, flexible and confident in the face of problems since every problem had its unique set of issues to be dealt with and that too often I was required to step out of my comfort zone to for example negotiate terms, communicate with different people, etc.

Also, I learnt and gained intercultural skills due to the different people that were present and I learnt how one should proactively seek to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds as each has some unique learning to offer. Finally, I learnt how self-reflection can help us to improve ourselves as only when we self-reflect do we gain awareness of our strengths and weaknesses and how weaknesses could be managed and overcome or at least reduced to a reasonable and acceptable extent. I also understood that the realisation of our strengths can boost confidence and morale.

  1. What transferable skills do you still need to develop further, and how do you intend to do this as you transition into work?

Although I believe I have strong presentation skills and can get my idea across confidently and without any hesitation, I feel that I often fail to manage my time in a way so as to allocate it to every point in a manner that each gets to be explained in required detail. That is to say, I often spend too much at the beginning, leaving less time for the points that are to follow, providing it with lesser coverage than it requires.

Additionally, I get a little nervous when it is time for the audience to ask questions and that I need to learn to respond gracefully where I do not know the answer to a question. In this regards, I plan to present my presentations to someone other than the audience beforehand for an independent view so that I am prepared for possible questions that might follow. Furthermore, Skill Portfolio I will intentionally pay more attention in practice for proper allocation of time and cut out the excess explanation in the planning phase only. I will continue this practice on a regular basis so that when it’s time for me to take a job I am fully prepared…
