Introduction

The current assignment is related to the analysis of the sound tracks of the different scenes and the meanings that these sound tracks hold. Apart from that, the assignment has also discussed in detail the purpose of these sound tracks and the impact that these sound tracks have on the subsequent films. The sounds that have been analyzed are taken up from the film Apocalypse Now 1979.Sound and Music.

Sound and Music Three different scenes of the films have been analyzed in detail along with the sound tracks that have been used in these different scenes. Furthermore, the assignment also includes discussion related to detailed description and background of the scenes along with the definition of time, space, fidelity and rhythm in music. The concluding part of the assignment is related to the impact that the scenes in the movie along with their sounds have on the subsequent films of this kind.

Description of the film (Apocalypse Now 1979)

The movie “Apocalypse Now” (1979) was created and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The film was visually beautiful, ground-breaking masterpiece with out of the ordinary and symbolic sequences detailing the confusion, aggression, fear, and nightmarish madness of the Vietnam War. Coppola had already become a renowned producer and director, Sound and Music,following his two money-spinning and critically-acclaimed Godfather films (1972 and 1974) – the epic saga of a Mafia-style patriarch and his successor. This outrageous film did for the Vietnam War genre did what “The Godfather” did for the movie “Gangster” (Rogerebert, 1979).

The highly publicized setbacks and catastrophes in the back breaking shoot was planned for about 17 weeks but it ended up lasting about 34 weeks, along with extra-marital affairs, a grandiose and suicidal director, drug use and other forms of madness, were mostly due to a rain drenching typhoon named (Olga) and a star got disabled plus near fatal heart attack for star Martin Sheen. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards which is a big achievement in itself as it’s not a piece of cake for low budget and catastrophes filled film to reach this aim and height. The awards include Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor Male (Robert Duvall), Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction &Set Decoration, and Best Film Editing, but the film won only two well-deserved awards such as Best Cinematography (Vittorio) and Best Sound (IMDB,Sound and Music,

Descriptions of the Scenes:

The detailed descriptions of the scenes that have been chosen for the analysis have been described as under

Scene no.1:

The first scene that has been analyzed is related to the choppers and the fighter planes.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Choppers and Fighter planes are firing and bombing on a village where the groups of gangsters were living with their families. Farmers, their cattle, children, men and blameless people all were running away from the firing and bombs that were dropped by the choppers! Many people can be seen killed during this attack. There were about 6 to 7 Helicopters that had taken part in the operation to finish the entire village. Along with that, Cars, trucks etc. were blown by rockets, and then guards jumped from the helicopters on land and started to shoot people who were left alive. The concept that has been identified is that the concept of warfare attrition depicted the situation of war between two enemy countries.

Background sound in scene no.1:

In this scene, the background sound is a common track mostly used in war and soldiers movies nowadays. It is a tune which is used to motivate the soldiers and raises their adrenaline rush and passion so that they can go with full force, motivation, without having any fear in their hearts or in mind. The lack of fear and increase their morale and confidence to go out confidently on to the battlefield and perform according to the expectations.

Scene no.2:

The second scene of the movie that has been chosen is related to the victory celebration that was conducted by the soldiers. In the second scene it was observed that after being victorious and after completing their first mission, all the soldiers, captains, Chiefs Etc. are enjoying their victory by drinking beer, whisky, wine etc. Some are smoking cigarettes or cigar! They have made a circle and in between girls are dancing on a country song to provide motivation to the soldiers. The concept that has been identified in this case is the concept of contentment that has been derived from the scene that has been mentioned above

Background sound Scene no.2:

In the second scene, we can clearly see that they were happy and enjoying their time as the mission was a successful one. Plus the soldiers were feeling great because all of them were enjoying the motivational songs and the dance that was provided by the dancing girls. The sound was a country song with transitions of a little bit of jazz, basically, after hearing that sound the soldiers started to dance &stand up on their seats and enjoyed their victory even more.

Scene no.3:

In the final scene that has been chosen, the scenario was that the hero of the film is involved in the conversation with the chief and to the people senior to him and discussing the final mission they want to achieve.  All of them were tensed and the look on their faces was intense as it was a tough mission to accomplish. So to devise a suitable strategy, they were having a long discussion on it. The concept of warfare strategy development has been identified in the case as the hero and his chief was involved in the intense conversation regarding the strategy of the mission that they were going to achieve.

Background sound Scene no.3:

In this scene the director of the film, in order to present the intensity of the scene to the audience, carefully chose the best possible suspense sound so that the audience whose watching the film also feels that something great is soon going to happen after this scene. In short, the song was a slow suspense typed song to create a sense of suspense. The soundtrack used in this scene was helpful in communicating its intensity towards the audience.
