Abstract

The qualitative report is based on the analysis of the data collected by an interview and analyzed by the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The report also discusses how the data has been analyzed in this qualitative report as the steps in a qualitative analysis are discussed thoroughly. It has been found from this analysis that the relationship of an interviewee with his best friend is highly positive. It is further found that the interviewee has positive views about the friendship and believes that they are essential in everyone’s life given that they are trustworthy. There are some benefits and limitations of the IPA method as well which is also discussed in the report in a brief manner.

Research Question

Every research aims to achieve certain objectives by answering the research questions. The research question for this qualitative report considering the type of data collection and analysis is as follows:

  • What is the perception of individuals towards the friendship and best friends in the modern era?

This qualitative report revolves around this research question and aims to answer the question by the end of the report.

Data Collection Method

In the view of Patton (2005), the data collection method varies once the type of data to be collected is identified. For the purpose of this research, only qualitative data is collected and the two most common data primary data collection methods to collect the qualitative data include the interview and focus groups. The data collection method used for this qualitative report is the interview; the interview technique has been employed keeping the research title in mind. The face to face interview technique is used in this research because it leads to spontaneous response and the rate of response is high. However, there is a potential limitation in that the sample size is generally small when interviews are used to collect the data. In this case, only 1 respondent has been interviewed due to the limitation of time and resources. The participant selected for this qualitative research is named Alexander who is being interviewed about his best friend and his perception of the friends these days.

Method of Analysis

For the purpose of qualitative data collected through interview, the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) method is selected for the data analysis. In the view of Chapman and Smith(2002), the IPA method aims to analyze in detail the perception and thinking of the individuals considered in a sample. IPA method does not focus on providing the objective view on the title rather it presents the opinion of the individual being interviewed in this research. I have selected to use IPA method over discourse analysis (DA) given the fact that the report aims to analyze the perception of the interviewee and the IPA method is used to analyze the perception or beliefs of individuals (Cope, 2011)…
