Abstract

The virtual fracture clinic is a modern concept which aims to help medical practitioners diagnose patients that are located geographically apart. It is unfortunate that the scaphoid fractures are mostly gone undiagnosed because most physicians prefer the patients to consider the “wait and see” process of healing of the bone by itself. The main objective of the study is to bring to use the advancements in technology to facilitate patient care and health standards.  The research is entirely based on the qualitative research method in which the non-numeric data is considered for the analysis. The data is to be collected from the internet and the institution based websites. There would be several complications and ethical issues that are to be taken under consideration including data collection and new clinical practice methods. The proposal will discuss the dire need for discovering new ways of implementations of technology in the field of diagnostics and healthcare.

Research Proposal

Introduction

A scaphoid fracture is the break of the scaphoid bone that is found in the wrist. The main symptoms are the pain at the base of the thumb which causes restriction movement and the loss of functionality of the hand. At the very initial stages, muscle swelling and inflammation are accompanied by tenderness. The worst results include the nonunion of the fracture, avascular necrosis, and arthritis. The number of cases observed is considered to be very high due to which a complete and coherent solution for handling the issue is required. The virtual fracture clinic is a concept that will allow the doctors to observe and diagnose patients even if they are located geographically far away from the doctors (Sander et al., 2018). The orthopaedic physiotherapist or the advanced practice registered nurses are less expensive, and that’s why they would help in the treatment. The main aim of the paper would be to critically evaluate and analyze the implementation of the virtual fracture clinic for the clinical scaphoid fractures.

Literature Review

Due to the intensively increasing number of fractures observed of a similar nature, and the vast amounts of money spent at conventional fracture clinics, there is a dire need of the virtual fracture clinic. The virtual fracture clinic is one of the most popular rehabilitation concepts at which specific musculoskeletal injuries are being treated (Sander et al., 2018). Currently, several types of research are being completed on the handling of these type of musculoskeletal injuries that may result in the long term based paralysis, or intensively high pain is observed. The best and the most effective solution for such cases are considered as the virtual fracture clinic (Moon et al., 2016). According to an exclusive report on the medical science and its connection with the technology, the overall change in the medical diagnostics, and the management of the patients is evolving rapidly (Idram et al., 2017). The healthcare institutes have made some policies as well as standards which are followed to manage the patients more efficiently and effectively. This would help in the enhancement of the quality care and reduction of the inconvenience at the ends of both; the doctors and the patients.

Researchers have established that the scaphoid fractures are mostly gone undiagnosed because most physicians prefer the patients to consider the “wait and see” process of healing of the bones by themselves (Robinson et al., 2017).  Latest researches have mentioned that almost less than 20% of the scaphoid fractures cases get fused and cured if left untreated. This concept is applied by many registered nurses without using the X-ray readings, which is known to result in the increased damage collectively. It was a common practice to let such injuries get healed on their own because of the lack of awareness about the disastrous effects that could be caused if the injury turned chronic (White et al., 2017). The severe consequences include the permanent disability of the hand along with loss of sensory dermatomes in the area. The clinical scaphoid fractures are crucial to be handled and must be discussed with the expert consultants as the uncertainty of bone fusion during the fracture is very high (Rua et al., 2018).
