Background to the choice of subject (Reasons)

The increase in the use of information systems technology in human resources and business has helped many organizations grow rapidly (Dery 2006), despite the rate of its growth, the role of HRIS in organizations is still under-researched. Therefore this research will help organizations understand the usefulness of HRIS and how it can give them a competitive advantage.

Human resource information systems(HRIS) Technology has been defined by several authors. Bulmash (2010), defined it as any technology that supports human resource business activities of recruitment, performance management and HR administration, and also helps to lighten the workload of HR practitioners, therefore, allowing them to focus on more strategic tasks.

The uses of HRIS now goes beyond storing and retrieving employee’s data, but now includes more advanced functions such as report development, manpower planning and even evaluation of human resource policies and practices( Vrontis 2010).
Human resource information systems have dramatically altered how HR services are delivered and managed by organizations, and if used effectively it can make the HR function more efficient and add value to the organization. The effective management of a firm’s human resources is a key source of competitive advantage for organizations, therefore for the delivery and support of the HR all depend on technology, specifically, human resource information systems(HRIS).

My reasons for the choice of this subject are

(1) Who are the key authors in this field/subject area?
a) Eddy 2006
b) Ball 2001
c) Bussler & Davis 2002
d) Vrontis, C. A (2010)
e) Bulmash (2010)
f) Derry (2006)

(2) What are the main theories/debates?
There is the social construction theory of technology which states that technology does not exist in a void but may be developed to satisfy a societal need ( Dery, Grant & Wiblen, 2006).

The technology acceptance model suggests that the degree to which individuals use and accept technology is reliant on some definite factors( Moore, 1995). The theories proposed are two types of factors.

1) Perceived ease of use: Davis et al (1989), suggested that new technologies are more likely to be accepted by employees if they perceive that it will be easy to use and effort free.

2) Perceived usefulness; David et al (1989), opined that if employees believe that the use of a particular technology will increase their work role and performance, they will be willing to accept it.

Most authors have talked about the relevance of human resource information system in the organizations but yet wondered why the subject area is still under research, The role of human resource information systems considering the fact that information systems have grown in diversity and complexity and organizations now understand the need for it. Although some organizations are still considering it, because of its challenges and the finance required to set it up.

(3) Is there any legislation relevant to this subject area?
Data Protection Act 1998- The Data protection act helps in controlling how employee’s personal information is used by organizations or businesses. Because the HRIS can also be used to store employee’s information, The role of human resource information systems their rules should be followed, it should be kept safe and secured and information should not be transferred without adequate protection.

Proposed methods of data collection:

The quantitative method of research will be adopted which is the questionnaire.

This is referred to as Primary data collection, which will be made possible by (The use of Bristol online survey which is e-Questionnaire). The primary method of data collection helps with the validity of the research.

Possible methods of data analysis:

I will use excel as a tool to analyse the data that will be gotten and descriptive statistics such as table and percentage.

Future action:
(1) What are sources of information/support available to you?

A) Academic journals

B) Articles.

C) University library.

D) Information from the organization.

(2) What obstacles/barriers may you be faced with as you continue your research?

A) There may be issue of slow rate response from the employees due to tight schedule at their work places.

B) The issue of time may arise as the research will be conducted within a short period of time.

But in other to tackle these two problems, I intend to follow up the employees through emails, text or phone calls, and also will work very hard in other to meet up with period of time given by the University for the research.

(3) What do you plan to do next?

a) Continue to read further around the subject area, get more information on the subject area.

b) Do a viva presentation

c) Get to see my supervisor and begin my dissertation (which is mostly begun from the chapter 2, although it may vary by the supervisor)….
