ABSTRACT

THE UN PEACEKEEPING MISSION IN AFRICA, In this research paper, an attempt has been made to highlight the UN and the international community’s intervention in Sierra Leone, while analyzing the employment of UNAMSIL and the success of its mandate.

In the beginning, the genesis of the conflict in Sierra Leone and the chronology of the UN intervention have been discussed in detail to create a pertinent setting for the research. It has been followed by UNAMSIL’s active assistance to the Sierra Leone government in the DDR process. Delivery of humanitarian assistance is the third point of emphasis, followed by a discussion on the implementation of peace and ceasefire agreements and providing support to the general elections. Towards the end, relevant conclusions and findings have also been drawn from the literature review.

Overall, it has been concluded that UNAMSIL’s employment in the DDR process was successful to the extent of disarmament and demobilization; however, it failed to carry out the reintegration in a requisite manner. UNAMSIL was also generally successful in DHA; however, owing to the unwillingness of the government and absence of formal institutions, it was unable to establish the country on the way to prosperity. As far ensuring implementation on the peace agreements, despite an initial setback, UNAMSIL quickly recovered and thereafter achieved this objective successfully. Finally, with regards to the support to the general elections, UNAMSIL succeeded though there were a few observations in terms of low turnout.
