The advent of globalization has utterly changed the perception of the people around the world. They want to experience other cultures, try different cuisines and want to learn new languages.

The upcoming generations are looking forward to developing a new blend of culture that incorporates traditions and customs from all around the world and is more socially aware of the other societies that were out of reach of the prior generations.

Providing exceptional service to maintain customer loyalty is the aim of all the niches of the hospitality industry since the success of all the companies working within this sector heavily depends on it. Nothing harms it more than an unsatisfied customer who had a bad experience with the working staff.

A loyal customer would likely to come back if he/she had a great time while traveling with an airline or staying at a luxury resort or a hotel. A congenial staff would surely make it happen for a company. This is where the recruitment and hiring process comes into practice.

During the industrialized era, the hiring and recruitment were not intricate, and most of the people could easily qualify to do the jobs that were offered at that time. As times changed, competition became fierce particularly when women stepped in and started working in the industries along with men.

On the way to cope up with growing competition, the employers were urged to find more complex and multifaceted selection methods. According to Zámečník, (2014), the selection process is challenging in the competitive market since companies are only looking for a competent and efficient workforce.

The major focus of this dissertation is to evaluate the effectiveness of job interview as a tool through investigating the hiring and recruitment practices employed by Jurys Inn hotel and highlight various assessment techniques to determine the best and worst interview procedures in order to find the most effective method.

This paper will also provide an overall snapshot of the interview procedures in the hospitality industry and make recommendations to assist the future researchers who want to contribute to the hiring and recruitment investigation and suggest how companies can utilize job interviews to make superior hiring decisions. We will also study the limitations and advantages of adopting the interview process.

The main research question for this thesis is:

What are the tools and techniques that make the employment interview the most valuable method for making tactical recruitment decisions?

Supplementary issues that will also be discussed in the research to be:

  1. Is employment interview designed to target all the available talent in the market or only supports those who are believed to be socially proficient?
  2. What is the degree of impact of first impressions on the decision making?
  3. Is this recruitment tool being suitable enough to judge the competency of the applicant?

This report merely aims to assess the job interview tools and how they facilitate in making strategic hiring decisions.

We also intend to include how an interviewer can utilize the information that he/she unintentionally gathered during an interview and highlight some latest tools and techniques that can increase the productivity of the interview in regard to obtaining more knowledge regarding the skills and competencies of the applicant.

Although the research question does not require a recommendation to be made at the end of this master’s thesis, we will sum up our findings in some recommendations for businesses that choose to use the job interview in their recruitment process…..
