Research Question

The specific question being asked in the research was what is the impact of social networking on society in terms of new media?

Theoretical Context

Media and Communication The theoretical perspective of this research is to demonstrate that society is rapidly taking a keen interest in the new media. In order to describe new media, it has been researched that all the content that is available on demand by using different forms of electronic communication through internet is known as “new media” (Biel, 2016). New media is not much different from old media, it happened when new technology introduced in the society is called new media. In the view of William et al (2008), social networking profiles created by young people in order to maintain their personal information and allow others to post content on their profile. Therefore, individuals are creating their personal network with the help of new media. The research indicates that at an early stage, there were social websites as classmates.com and sixdegree.com in order to focus on social interaction among schoolmates as well as focusing on indirect relationships. Those websites were non-profitable but later on, two new models came into existence with new technology (new media) and known for trust-based as well as friendship based website such as epinion.com. Social networking has different features that attract society towards new media. Such as; scrapping, photo sharing and profile setting (William et al., 2008).

The study shows that in the last five years social networking is rapidly growing and around ten millions of people are engaged with social networking. Research indicates that society adopts networking in a way so that their profile shows an overall picture of adolescent behaviour. Adolescent’s profiles contain intimate, observable self-acknowledgement as well as peer interaction. Furthermore, it also addresses implications for parents in order to monitor as well as show their involvement regarding social networking (Lenhart and Madden, 2007). In the view of Hines and Finkelhor (2007), 55% of juveniles are engaged with social networking and the main prominence research is to analyse or investigate the concept of blogging among youth and how they are creating their social interactions as well as its impact on their lives.

Hypothetically, estimation indicates that 46% of younger boys and 44% of younger girls are interested in order to participate on social network sites. Therefore, an estimation shows that younger boys are more eager than girls in order to participate as well as gender seems to influence sharing on social sites.  Nevertheless, the percentage of older boys and girls is higher as compared to younger ones. It shows that 70% of older boys and 57% of older girls are participating in social network sites. Frequently, older boys use these social websites in order to perform flirt and sometimes use these social sites in order to meet new people according to their age groups Furthermore, older girls use these social sites so that they communicate with new people (Boyd and Ellison, 2007).

On the basis of an empirical data, it has been identified that young girls and boys pursue the salutation which they get from others on their looks commented on. However, girls are more concerned with the comments that they received and from whom, friends or known people rather than strangers. This means comments received from others and giving value to other’s looks maintains a social relationship of friendship (Larsen, 2009).
